The TIMS report, an
international research report on math and science achievement, found
students in the U.S. scoring very low in the area of measurement and
geometry when compared with students in other countries. Many
states that do statewide testing, Texas, Florida and California are also
finding low scores in this area. Schools and classroom teachers are being
challenged to address these areas of weakness. This workshop will support
you in doing just that...becoming competent and confident in teaching
measurement and geometry!!
When teachers are faced with teaching measurement and
geometry their problems are multifaceted. The resource support that most
teachers rely on (the text), usually puts measurement and geometry at the
end of the book, and does not provide rich, engaging, interactive
experiences for the learner. Students can find measurement and geometry an
exciting area of study if taught correctly.
Come spend a day with Barbara
Novelli exploring how to make the complex topics of measurement
and geometry both student-friendly and teacher-friendly. Measurement should
be connected to real world applications to be meaningful. The only way to
develop an informal justification in geometry is through quantifying
geometric shapes...measuring them!!
Barbara will explore the big ideas in geometry such as
similarity and congruency, properties of both 2 and 3 dimensional shapes and
the relationship between shapes with easy and classroom tested activities.
Barbara’s class is a wonderful way for teachers to
have fun while exploring activities and ideas that you can use immediately
in your classroom to improve student achievement in measurement and
geometry.
Barbara will have easy to use "Learning Centers" at the workshop that
will allow you to experience Hands On – Minds On
activities that make teaching geometry entertaining and exciting!

What You Will Learn:
- Teacher and student friendly ways to teach geometry and measurement to
support student achievement!
- Effective strategies and suggestions on how to use manipulatives and
measurement to teach the relationship among both 2 and 3-D shapes.
- How to integrate geometry and measurement!
- Easy to facilitate Learning Centers that teach geometry and
measurement.
- Powerful ways to use geometry and measurement to teach vocabulary and
english language development.
- How to ask thoughtful questions and get thoughtful answers in your
math lessons.
- How to use art and literature to support your geometry and measurement
units!
- An understanding of how kids learn geometry and measurement.
- A fun and fascinating way to teach proportional reasoning and use
measurement to justify your reasoning.
- Ways to integrate other mathematics such as place value, fractions and
decimals.
