Learning has nothing to do with what the
teacher covers, and everything to do with what the student understands.
The fundamental goal of this workshop is to examine big and little
ideas that foster a deeper understanding of a variety of math concepts,
relationships and procedures.
This workshop targets areas of
mathematics for students in grades two through six. Teachers will
participate in hands-on experiences in six different content areas.
Practice Rounds examine multiple ways to provide playful, intelligent
practice of basic skills at many proficiency levels. Because the concepts
of division is frequency troublesome, attention is directed to connecting
understanding of the idea of fair shares and the procedures in the
algorithm. Four models demonstrate how fractions and decimals share common
ground. A Four-in-One Rule invites participants to explore one measurement
tool with multiple units for diversity in measurement.
A playful look at Geometry is explored
through puzzles, games and property clues for quadrilaterals. Math
Intrigue looks at problem solving contexts, interesting questions, and
strategies for solutions. Join Judith and other educators for a day of
shared commitment to advancing our professional growth and collaboration.
What You Will Experience:
- How to simplify and strengthen areas of potential
weakness in elementary mathematics
- How to teach for conceptual and procedural
understanding using models and manipulatives
- How to extend recall of basic facts through playful
intelligent practice called Practice Rounds
- How to create and design your own classroom Practice
Rounds
- How to focus the learning environment around learning
goals and state or local math content standards
- How to integrate and enhance mathematical relationships
with everyday ideas
- How to use math journals for meaningful communication
of ideas about learning
- How to foster curiosity and inspire perseverance
- How to have fun with math and facilitate confident
successful learners
- How to illuminate what students know and understand
through open-ended questions and experiences
