A majority of math educators agree that the most basic idea in mathematics is that mathematics makes sense. The fundamental goal of this workshop is to enable teachers to learn how to create an environment where students experience mathematics that make sense.

This workshop targets math content standards and areas of mathematics that are typically troublesome for students in grades two through six. Teachers will participate in a variety of standards-based activities in number, geometry, measurement, data organization, and problem solving focusing on improving student understanding and achievement.

In this workshop Judith will share tools and strategies useful in understanding and retaining math concepts and relationships. She will model the development of mathematical language and its role in thinking and communicating. Integral to the workshop is related children’s literature, historical/cultural connections, and plenty of ideas for playful practice of facts and skills.

Join Judith for a seminar grounded in making sense of mathematics through hands-on experiences, thinking and communicating protocols, and playful, intelligent practice of facts and skills.

Two Day Seminar:

This course meets the requirements of:
 • No Child Left Behind and is specifically designed with these standards:
 • ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Education Act)
 • Title I and Title II: Teacher Improvement
 • Scientifically based research

What You Will Experience:

  • How to make sense of “trouble spots” in elementary mathematics.
  • How to teach for conceptual and procedural understanding.
  • How to extend recall of facts through playful, intelligent practice.
  • How to align teaching and learning goals with state content standards.
  • How to integrate and enhance mathematical ideas through language, literature, history, and problem solving.
  • How to use thinking skills for meaningful communication of ideas.
  • How to have fun with math and facilitate success.
  • How to facilitate assessment experiences that illuminate what students know and understand.
