A majority of math
educators agree that the most basic idea in mathematics is that mathematics
makes sense. The fundamental goal of this workshop is to enable teachers
to learn how to create an environment where students experience mathematics
that make sense.
This workshop targets math content
standards and areas of mathematics that are typically troublesome for
students in grades two through six. Teachers will participate in a variety
of standards-based activities in number, geometry, measurement, data
organization, and problem solving focusing on improving student
understanding and achievement.
In this workshop Judith will share tools
and strategies useful in understanding and retaining math concepts and
relationships. She will model the development of mathematical language and
its role in thinking and communicating. Integral to the workshop is related
children’s literature, historical/cultural connections, and plenty of ideas
for playful practice of facts and skills.
Join Judith for a seminar grounded in making
sense of mathematics through hands-on experiences, thinking and
communicating protocols, and playful, intelligent practice of facts and
skills.
